Project 2: Learns at home with mother in Edinburgh. Teaches the deaf with his father, creator of phonetic "visible speech." Gets patent for telephone. Marries Mabel Hubbard, deafened by scarlet fever as a child. Wins award at Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Becomes member of the French Legion of Honor. Becomes U.S. citizen. Builds laboratory in Nova Scotia summer home. Invents man-carrying kites. Helps found National Geographic Society. Experiments with sheep breeding, producing large number of multiple births. Continues teaching deaf at Clark School in Massachusetts for 51 years. Dies in Nova Scotia in 1922.

Project 4: Explanations and descriptions of hearing aids as well as ear operations now being done.
Project 5: One group advocates American Sign Language, pointing to the rich communication available and the sense of community. Others contend the deaf need to function in a hearing world and should learn lip-reading and have speech therapy.
Project 6: Bell's tetrahedral designs as well as Chinese kites are all possible investigations. Franklin's experiments with lighning using a kite can also be included.
