In the Beginning

  1. Find a fiction book whose author's last name begins with "S."
    • What is the author's name?
    • What is the book's title?
    • What is the first sentence of the book?
    • What made you choose this particular book?
    • Do you think you will like it? Why or why not?
  2. Discover where nonfiction begins. Choose the first book that begins a section. For examle, the first book in the 500s, or the 520s, or the 590s.
    • What is the call number?
    • What is the author's name?
    • What is the book's title?
    • What is the subject of the book?
    • Is this a subject that interests you?
    • What other subjects are you interested in?
  3. Check the catalog under your favorite subject. Choose the book that comes first or begins the listing for that subject.
    • What is the call number?
    • What is the author's name?
    • What is the book's title?
    • What is the subject of the book?
    • Find the book and hold onto it for later discussion. (If the book has already been chosen, find another on the same subject).
  4. Find a magazine that begins with the letter "___"
      What is its title?
    • Find the table of contents and write down the name of the first article in the issue.
    • Check the rest of the magazine collection. Which ones interest you?
  5. Find a very fat book in the reference collection.
    • What is the call number?
    • What is the author's name?
    • What is the book's title?
    • What is the subject of the book?
    • What is the beginning sentence?
  6. What do you think is the best way to begin the school year?
